Grumpy Snowmen was a project designed by the GEL Lab (Games for Entertainment and Learning) at Michigan State University.  A team of five students and our game design professor was commissioned by the College of Communication Arts and Sciences to create a casual holiday season game for the college. I acted as a designer and manager, working closely with the programmers and artists to create a fun and addictive game representative of Michigan State University.

Originally we created a Holiday Version of Grumpy Snowmen complete with 4 levels and 2 projectiles just in time for the Holiday Season of 2011. Early into 2012 we decided to expand upon our original concept and create a Deluxe Version. The Deluxe Version contains 20 levels, 6 Projectiles and a handful of extra features and polish. In the Deluxe Version I was able to try my hand at a majority of the Level Design, as the first four levels were created by my professor Brian Winn.

Grumpy Snowmen was also the G.E.L. Lab’s first attempt at creating a touch based game for the iOS platform. It was an incredible learning experience as we dove right into mobile development and the difficulties associated with it. Our team became familiar with developing for multiple iOS devices (iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch) and the necessary requirements for a successful multi-device release.

As of right now Grumpy Snowmen has accumulated over 21,000 downloads and has become a big hit around Michigan State University! The G.E.L. Lab and Grumpy Snowmen has also been featured in two newspaper articles as well as a radio interview!
